Security Guard becomes Accenture Software Engineer

It was only my strong will to complete the education that kept me going!

“I joined the class for learning about technology on weekends. And whenever I got any free time I used to practice coding. That is how I was able to up-skill myself and get a job.” – Magesh Harikirishnan

Meet Magesh Harikrishnan, a security guard turned software engineer. Magesh is currently working at Accenture. He resides near Chennai along with his mother and a sister.

From working as a security guard to being a software engineer! What is the story behind this?

“Back then, I needed money for college fees and other needs. So, I worked at many different places.

Before working as a security guard, I worked as a Newspaper distributor in the Tambaram area of Chennai, then as a Xerox machine operator. After that, I did some sales work in the supermarket and also as a broker. But still, I was not able to collect the required amount, so I worked as a Security guard.

Apart from all this, I joined a class for learning about technology on weekends. And whenever I got any free time I used to practice coding. That is how I was able to up-skill myself and get a job.”

The most challenging part of this journey:

The most challenging part was managing both my college as well as my security guard job. I had to go for the night shift from 10 PM at night to 7 AM in the morning, and sometimes till 9 AM in the morning, and then to college in the afternoon from 2 PM to 7 PM. This was very challenging, and then I had to attend my classes on weekends.

It was only my strong will to complete the education that kept me going. I was able to overcome this problem and concentrate on my studies.

My motivation was my Family.

Every day I remembered my family and my situation. I remember all the words that people had said to me during that time.

“You will not get anything, you won’t be able to achieve anything, you can't get a job, you can't do anything, and you are a waste." Even my professors started saying things like these at some point.

The Saviour!

Your dad has not done anything, but you will do everything. I am motivated every time I look at my mother's face and listen to her powerful words. She is a very hardworking and caring person.

Also, I made a few friends during my Security Guard job. They all helped me and kept me motivated throughout.

A great life lies ahead…

Life is sailing smoothly now. I have started working on my ambition. I am not going to reveal that now. Soon, I am about to do something greater than I have ever done till now.
